A Study on Southern Gothic Features in A Rose for Emily Abstract Based on the discourses of geopolitics and psychoanalysis, the paper attempts to study southern gothic features in gothic tradition of English and American literature via a southern novel A Rose for Emily, written by William Faulkner, a Nobel Prize winner in 1949. Analyzed through four aspects of background, characters, plot and theme, aiming to discuss gothic features influenced by the American South social background. Phenomenologically, as a terrifying and weird style, gothic always represents despair and depression. Likewise, southern gothic features are often used to display hopelessness in the southern literature instead of merely creating a thriller with elements such as horror, mystery, supernatural, misfortune and death. Ontologically, it reflects the dying out traditional life in the Old South at that time as well as reveals that folks lived in the South are at sea towards future. However, as the matter of fact, the purpose of gothic style in William Faulkners A Rose for Emily is encouraging the white natives, yeomen, the declining planters, especially the black slaves, to conquer the physical fear and overcome the postbellum difficulties in a critical tone. It also helps to enhance appreciation values in this representative fiction among the southern literature by means of this study.
