A High-Efficiency Monte Carlo Receiver for Digital Communications Abstract – Stochastic Ba

A High-Efficiency Monte Carlo Receiver for Digital Communications Zhi Tian Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Michigan Technological University Houghton, MI 49931 Abstract – Stochastic Bayesian detection has recently emerged as a competitive receiver design paradigm for wireless communications applications. It uses Monte Carlo simulations to perform Bayesian inference of a proba- bilistically modeled communication system so as to obtain the maximum a posterior (MAP) symbol detection and/or channel estimation results. The Monte Carlo concept is attractive in that it is intuitive, optimal, and works for generic Bayesian network structures. However, conven- tional Monte Carlo methods suffer from poor convergence especially when there is less likely evidence in the collected samples, in which case the simulations are wasted in sam- ple spaces that contribute little to the inference estimates. We present an adaptive sampling method in which the sam- ple allocation process is optimized for efficient MAP detec- tion. It is then demonstrated that this optimized adaptive sampling method can be applied to wireless communication systems for high-efficiency symbol detection and channel estimation. The effectiveness of the derived blind Bayesian multiuser detection is verified by computer simulations. I. INTRODUCTION The rapid development of the next-generation digital wire- less communication systems calls for better symbol detection techniques to combat channel impairments such as multiple access interference (MAI) and intersymbol interference (ISI). Monte Carlo receivers have emerged for optimal symbol de- tection and channel estimation in such applications [1]-[3]. As a graphical modeling tool, a Bayesian network can intu- itively capture the relationship among the contributing factors in a complex system. When applied to digital and wireless communications, a Bayesian detector can naturally exploit the structure of the coded signals. Bayesian detection is opt
