Unit Six Overcoming Difficulties

Name of Unit: Overcoming difficulties
Topics to be considered within the unit:
1. “overcoming difficulties”, why and how? (what we are doing to achieve the goal and what the successful people in this unit are doing their job?)
2. What is a successful personal description in your mind? Talk about writing skills used in texts in this unit. What are you going to learn from them?
General objective for the lesson:
Encourage the students to learn how to overcome difficulties in their lives and study, and learn from major character in this unit. Also learn to write a personal description as one of the major writing skills.
Specific objective for the lesson:
By working on Text A “True Height”, students will be able to:
grasp the main idea (people will face difficulties in realizing their dreams, but overcoming difficulties will help them gain more from life) and basic skills about how to write a personal description
appreciate the character sketches skills displayed in text A (save the very most important detail of the character to the closing paragraph);
master the key language points and grammatical structure in the text;
conduct a series of reading, listening, speaking and writing activities related to the theme of the unit.
Content to be considered:
Main idea of the text.
Structure of the text.
Cultural background.
Language points.
Grammatical structures.
Writing strategy.
Methods to be used: Lecture and group discussion
Skills to be developed:
How to write a successful personal description and convey the author’s idea’s about the character.

vocabulary difficulties
sentence structure
Evaluation: vocabulary drills and writing a short essay on the class
Teaching Process:
Period 13 (135 minutes)
Step 1 Preview and checking. (Dictation, recitation, reading or testing etc.) (10--15 minutes)
