ABSTRACT: Ballistic soil nails have been used in the United States to repair
shallow roadway landslides for nearly 20 years. The U.S. Forest Service/Federal
Highway Administration “Application Guide for Launched Soil Nails” is the
principal design manual for designing with ballistic soil nails and employs a
simplified sliding wedge analysis using limit equilibrium concepts to determine the
factor of safety of a slope reinforced with soil nails. The design methodology
quantifies the tensile and shear resistance provided by the individual nails, but is
simplistic and is limited to linear failure surfaces in homogenous materials.
This paper explains some of the recent advancements in launched soil nail design
methodology including the new program LSNAP (Launched Soil Nail Analysis
Program) which builds on previous efforts (SNAP – Federal Highway
Administration) to accurately and efficiently quantify the tensile and shear
contribution of ballistic soil nails in a global stability analysis.
INTRODUCTION
The first soil nail launcher was developed in the 1980s from a compressed air
cannon originally manufactured by the British military to launch chemical weapon
canisters. Powered by air at pressures up to 20.7 MPa (3,000 psi), the cannon
typically fires a 6.1 meter (20 ft) long, 38 mm (1.5 in) diameter bar or tube into the
ground in a single shot at velocities exceeding 100 m/s (200 miles per hour) in order
to repair shallow (i.e. generally less than 5m (15 ft) deep) landslides. These rods
reinforce an unstable or potentially unsta
