Joint Scheduling and Admission Control for ATS-based Switching Nodes

Joint Scheduling and Admission Control for ATS-based SwitchingNodesJay Hyman, Aurel A. Lazar and Giovanni Paci ciDepartment of Electrical EngineeringandCenter for Telecommunications ResearchColumbia University, New York, NY 10027-6699AbstractA joint scheduling and admission control algorithm is pre-sented for Asynchronous Time-Sharing (ATS)-based switch-ing nodes carrying real-time trac. Systems based on ATSguarantee quality of service, at both the levels of cells andcalls, for three well-de ned trac classes. A mechanism isoutlined by which an admission control strategy can be tai-lored to a particular mix of trac by making use of high-levelinformation from the scheduler. This mechanism is basedon a principle of separation between scheduling and admis-sion control. A linear programming formulation is used to nd the admission control policy which will maximize theexpected system utility while maintaining the guaranteedquality of service. The admissible load region is introducedas a means of quantifying the capacity of a switch under theQOS constraints at the cell and call levels. Numerical calcu-lations for a single MAGNET II switching node carrying twoclasses of real-time trac are used to illustrate the e ects ofdi erent scheduling and admission control policies on boththe expected utility and the admissible load region.1. IntroductionIntegrated telecommunication networks carry trac of sev-eral di erent classes, including one or more real-time(isochronous) trac classes, each with its own set of traccharacteristics and performance requirements. Two di er-ent approaches have been advanced to deal with this phe-nomenon. In the circuit-switched approach, sucient re-sources are allocated to each call to handle its maximumutilization; this guarantees that the call will get the qualityof service (QOS) it requires, but may be wasteful of sys-tem resources. In the packet-switched approach, trac fromall sources is packetized, and statistical multiplexing tech-niques
