The advantages and superiority of this technique over traditional micro-density non-spectrometric gamma- ray tools are demonstrated. r 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. Introduction Geophysical borehole logging techniques are an inte- grated part of modern exploration activities in the coal mining industry. Among physically different borehole logging techniques, the only one having the capacity of providing on-line quantitative in situ grade control are those based on the application of a nucleonic system. The non-spectrometric (total gamma-rays count) back- scattered gamma–gamma technique is routinely used in borehole logging to delineate the coal seams and for in situ determination of density and ash content. The ash content is estimated through the correlation that, in general, exists between density and %ash in coal (Samworth, 1974; Reeves, 1977; Lavers and Smits, 1976; Brom and Drie- donks, 1981; Daniels et al., 1983). This technique requires a gamma-ray source and a scintillation detector to record the backscattered gamma rays. According to the distance chosen between the gamma-ray source and the scintillation detector, the backscattered gamma–gamma technique can be
