Memorization in Neutrally Stable Circuits Involving Delay

Memorization in Neutrally Stable Circuits Involving Delay H. O?ktem Institute of Applied Mathematics, Middle East Technical University, 06531 Ankara, Turkey, e-mail:hoktem@metu.edu.tr Abstract The zero input future behaviour of a dynamical system is determined by its initial state or initial function. For nontrivial regulatory systems involving adoption, learn- ing, specialization, differentiation that corresponds to the memorization of initial information. In this work, we studied neutrally stable systems involving delays, un- der aspect of memorization. In particular we showed that those systems are capable of memorizing initial functions which are capable of conveying much more infor- mation with respect to the initial states memorized by ODE systems. To generate the discussed class of systems we incorporated the delayed derivative of the state variables in the right hand side of conventional DDEs. Key words: memorization, kinetic logic, regulatory systems, delay differential equations, neutrally stable solutions 1 Introduction Qualitative dynamical features of regulatory dynamical systems and their re- lations with regulatory functions has grabbed interest of several researchers [6,8,9,11,12,15,16,18,20,22–24]. A very important qualitative feature of dynam- ical systems is stability. A dynamical system is stable if a differential shift in the initial conditions is diminished in time, it is unstable if a differential shift in the initial conditions is amplified in time and neutrally stable if a differential shift in the initial conditions is preserved in time [2,6,10,14,17,18,26]. The impacts of stability in dynamical systems are extensively discussed in literature. Stable behaviour is generally desired for keeping some variables at supposedly optimum values or periodic cycles [17,18,22,23]. Unstable circuits are typically responsible for chaotic behaviour or exponential grow [17]. Mul- tistationary/multistable systems, which include multiple number of stable or
