This paper is divided into six sections. The first section starts with the analysis of the concepts related to the quality assurance of higher education. The second section summarises the formation, historical development, and current situation of the EU and the European Higher Education Area. Then the focus of this paper shifts to the analysis of policies or treaties concerning quality assurance in the EU and the EHEA. The fourth section explores the main policies and actions taken in the EU. Then, after summarising strategies or types of quality assurance in European higher education in the fifth section, major conclusions related is drawn in the final section.
