Application Sheet AN6202 – Brake test repeatability
The Anthony Best Dynamics BR-series brake robot has been
used to perform emergency brake testing, giving far greater
accuracy and repeatability than can be achieved even by
experienced test drivers. The test appears at first glance a
simple one (see right); to apply a step load of 400N to the
brake pedal, causing the vehicle to decelerate from 130kph
to zero. After the initial step, the force must neither exceed
500N nor fall below 300N during the braking period.
Test profile required
However, the violent deceleration (up to 1g) which results from the braking makes it difficult for the test driver to hold the force
within the limits required. During a test campaign lasting an entire day, an experienced test driver attempted the test 27 times.
The results are shown below (left). Only 3 of the 27 attempts were successfully performed. On the other 24 runs the
pedal force went outside the test limits.
The BR1000 brake robot was fitted to the vehicle. The test was performed five times, with the brake robot controlling the
brake input. The results are below (right). All 5 attempts were successful. Not only did the force applied remain between
the 300N - 500N limits for the required period, it only deviated from the ideal 400N force by a maximum of 30N. This would
allow the tolerance band in the test definition to be tightened and hence improve the overall consistency of the results.
