The time allowed for the exam is one hour and forty minutes. Section A. Answer both questions. 1. Perspective is a key element in architectural design. What does the term perspective’ mean to you? Discuss its development in history and explain why it is important to architectural design today. Use examples of buildings and/or cities to support your view. 2. Compare and contrast the function and purpose of two of the following religious buildings: the Gothic Cathedral of Chartres, the Egyptian Pyramids, the Classical Acropolis in Athens, Islamic Mosques and Buddhist Temples. Be as detailed as possible. Explain the symbolism of the various architectural aspects of the buildings by their use of color, line, shape, rhythm, numerical or mathematical relationships, or any other elements of design, Finally, consider whether these edifices can or should be considered a work of art, and upon what reasons you base your assertions. Section B. Answer one of the following questions. 1. What do you consider to be the role of an architect today? 2. Choose a famous architect who is considered important to the deveplopment of architecture (your choice of designer may be alive or dead). Explain why you admire the work of this individual.
