Low sulphur fuel oil safety operation report Basically, MAN 2-ST Engines are optimized to operated on Heavy fuel oil (Max. 700cSt at 50℃) with heating the Heavy fuel oil (to keep the 10~15cSt at engine inlet). And, it must be emphasized the MAN 2-ST Engines can be operated on the lower and ultra low sulphur fuels without making modifications to the engine in itself. However, MGO/MDO fuel oil can be used to ensure a safe and reliable performance. It is meant there are some requirements on external system of fuels as below. - Viscosity and lubricity of the fuel - Keeping a high fuel pump pressure - Considering the changing of the cylinder oil and/or feed rate - Considering the two kind of fuel oil tank and cylinder oil tank - Other considerations Lubricity The refinery processes intended to remove, e.g. sulphur from the oil result not only in low viscosity, but also impacts the lubricity enhancing components of the fuel. Toll little Lubricity may result in fuel pump seizures. Therefore, it is recommended to test the lubricity before using fuels with less than 0.05% sulphur. Viscosity A low viscosity fuel oil challenge the function of the pump in three ways as below; 1. Beak down of hydrodynamic oil film 2. Insufficient injection pressure 3. Insufficient fuel index margin resulting in limitation in acceleration. Therefore, if the using fuels oil can’t be kept min. 2cSt(above 3cSt) at engine inlet whenever, the separate cooling system is to be considered. It will be defined the using fuel oil specification which is provided by bunker maker. If the using fuel oil can’t be kept the above 3cSt around 65℃, the cooling system for fuel oil will be considered. The cooling method(norminal cooling or chiller) will be defined how many temperature go-down in order to keep the viscosity.
