T he usual difference mat rices are essential for the co nstruct ion of many mix ed o rtho go nal array s, how ever there are also orthog onal array s w hich can not be obtained by the usual difference m atrices. In order t o construct these mixed o rthog onal array s, a class of special matrices so called generalized diff erence mat rices were disco vered by Zhang ( 1989, 1990, 1993) from the o rtho go na l decompositio ns o f pro jection matrices. An interesting equiv alent relationship between orthog onal array s and the g eneralized difference ma trices is int ro duced. A s an application, a lot of new orthog onal arrays o f run size 84 were constructed.
