These ratchet wheels usually have rectangular teeth, while the pawl should be reversible. There are no teeth on the ratchet, and the devices depend upon the wedging of smooth surface between the pawl and ratchet. In Fig 9-10a, the intermittent rotation of the ratchet depends upon the frictional force between the pawl and the ratchet surface, so it has no noise to transmit motion. Fig 9-10b and Fig 9-10c are internal ratchet mechanisms.
