We ?rst present the formulation of the discontinuous ?nite volume element (DFVE) method. Based on it,we derive the optimal order error estimates in a mesh dependent norm and in the L2-norm of the DFVE method. The di?erences between this paper and other articles are given a simple comparison in order to point out the advantages of this paper. This paper will give the punishment which is di?erent from the previous discontinuous ?nite volume element method.The punishment is the same as the discontinuous ?nite element method.By developing the connections of the DFVE method and the discontinuous ?nite element method and using the error estimates of DFE method ,we are able to get the optimal order error estimates in the mesh dependent norm and in the L2-norm of the DFVE method for second order elliptic problem.
