Despiteadvancesindiagnosis,surgery,andantimicrobialtherapy,mortalityratesassociatedwithcomplicatedintra- abdominalinfectionsremainexceedinglyhigh. Inordertodescribetheclinical,microbiological,andmanagement-relatedprofilesofbothcommunity-acquired andhealthcare-acquiredcomplicatedintra-abdominalinfections(IAIs),theWorldSocietyofEmergencySurgery (WSES),incollaborationwiththeSurgicalInfectionsSocietyofEurope(SIS-E)andotherprominentEuropean surgicalsocieties,hasdesignedtheCIAOstudy. TheCIAOstudyisamulticenter,observationalstudyandwillbecarriedoutinvarioussurgicaldepartments throughoutEurope.Thestudywillincludepatientsundergoingsurgeryorinterventionaldrainageforcomplicated IAI.
