Hy- drological models often do not take convergence as measured by contour curvature directlyintoaccount;insteadtheyusecomparablemeasureslikethetopographicindex orthehillslopewidthfunction.Thispaperfocussesonthequestionhowhillslopewidth functionsandcontourcurvaturearerelatedwithinthePlynlimoncatchments, Wales. It is shown that the total width function of all hillslopes suggest that the catchments areoveralldivergent,whichisincontrasttotheperceptionthatcatchmentsshouldbe 10 overallconvergent. Thisso-calledconvergenceparadoxisexplainedbythee?ectof skewedcurvaturedistributionsandextremecurvaturesnearthechannelnetwork.The hillslope-storageBoussinesq(hsB)modelisusedtoassesthee?ectofwithin-hillslope convergencevariabilityonthehydrologicalresponse.
