EconomicAgents,EthicsandInternational EconomicOrganisations BrunoS.Sergi The last sixty years have seen international economic organisations maintainapositionattheforefrontofpromotingeconomicgrowthand socioeconomic development. These organisations have not achieved as much against certain benchmarks, and several observers have ac- cusedthemofbeingunquali?edtomeettheneedsofthepoor,and evenfoundthemguiltyofsomethingworse,suchasfamineanddis- ease.Althoughtheseorganisationshaveorganisationalbehaviourand skills,manyoftheirfundedprojectslackforcefulnesstosuchanex- tentthattheyshouldonlybeanswerablethroughachievingcertaineco- nomicfactsbywayofethicsandmorals.Wedesignethicsandmoralsas twointerconnectedconcepts,andtherationalethatbindsalleconomic agentstotheirrespectiveobligationsmustbeinterpretedbye?ective coursesofactiondictatedbyeconomicrealities. KeyWords:ethicalandmoralcodes,internationalorganisations, nationalagents,politicaleconomy jelClassi?cation:a11,f02 Introduction No doubt, economic opportunities have been missing in the world, thoughunevenlyoverthelastdecades.Inthelightoftheoutcomesof theinternational courseofactionsthathavebeenconfused,pressures formoreresultshavecomefrominternationalorganisationssuchasthe UnitedNations,forexample,thatheldtheMillenniumAssemblyinNew YorkinSeptember2000inanendeavourtosettargetsanddeadlines,by whichbetterhumanwelfareshouldbecompleted.Thesetargets,known as the millennium development goals, were set for 2015.
