UDK619:616.348-002:636.4 EFFECTOFHIGHLYFERMENTABLEDIETARYFIBERONPIGPERFORMANCEINALARGE UNIT,INFECTEDWITHENDEMICSWINEDYSENTERY BILICBandBILKEIG BilkeiConsulting,Dübendorf,Switzerland (Received30.January2003) In a large south Hungarian fattening unit, 5637 pigs were allo- catedto10largebarnsandtreateduntilslaughterasfollows:Group1 (n=2722):fedwithdietscontaining9.6%highlyfermentableneutral detergent fiber. Group 2 (n =2915): fed with diets containing 6.1 % poorlyfermentableneutraldetergentfiber. Ineachgroup,the200smallestpigswereselectedastestsub- jects(=7.35%ingroup1and6.86%ingroup2).Theanimalsweresub- jectedtothefollowingdiagnosticprocedures:fecalsheddingofB.hyo- dysenteriae, antibody response, clinical signs, growth performance grossandmicroscopiclesionsspecificforswinedysentery(SD). SeroconversiontoandfecalsheddingofB.hyodysenteriaewere diagnosedinthemajorityofthepigsatday30aftertransporttothefat- teningunit.Atnecropsy,187animalsingrouponeandallpigsingroup two,revealedSDspecificgrosspathologicallesionsinthecolon.All animalsinbothgroupsshowedhistologicallesionsofcolon,typicalfor SD.Theclinicalimpressionsanddiarrheascoresrevealedsignificant differences (p0.05) between the animals offered a diet with 9.6 % highlyfermentablefiberandthosefedonadietwith6.1%poorlyfer- mentable fiber. Production parameters showed no significant differ- ences, but mortality differed significantly between the two groups (p0.05-?4.07%ingroup1and7.07%ingroup21). Implications:highlyfermentableneutraldetergentfiberpositively influencestheclinicalexpressionandproductivityinfatteningpigs,in- fectedwithendemicswinedysentery.
