Children’sandAdults’On-LineProcessingof SyntacticallyAmbiguousSentencesduringReading HollyS.S.L.Joseph1*,SimonP.Liversedge2 1Department of Experimental Psychology, University of Oxford, Oxford, United Kingdom, 2School of Psychology, University of Southampton, Southampton, United Kingdom Abstract While there has been a fair amount of research investigating children’s syntactic processing during spoken language comprehension,andawealthofresearchexaminingadults’syntacticprocessingduringreading,asyetverylittleresearch hasfocusedonsyntacticprocessingduringtextreadinginchildren.Intwoexperiments,childrenandadultsreadsentences containingatemporarysyntacticambiguitywhiletheireyemovementsweremonitored.InExperiment1,participantsread sentencessuchas,‘Theboypokedtheelephantwiththelongstick/trunkfromoutsidethecage’inwhichtheattachmentof aprepositionalphrasewasmanipulated.InExperiment2,participantsreadsentencessuchas,‘IthinkI’llwearthenewskirtI bought tomorrow/yesterday. It’s really nice’ in which the attachment of an adverbial phrase was manipulated. Results showedthatadultsandchildrenexhibitedsimilarprocessingpreferences,butthatchildrenweredelayedrelativetoadults intheirdetectionofinitialsyntacticmisanalysis.Itisconcludedthatchildrenandadultshavethesamesentence-parsing mechanisminplace,butthatitoperateswithaslightlydifferenttimecourse.Inaddition,thedatasupportthehypothesis thatthevisualprocessingsystemdevelopsatadifferentratethanthelinguisticprocessingsysteminchildren.
