Variousmetal-insulator-metal-(MIM-)typeplasmonicwaveguidesandgratingsareinvestigatednumerically.Threegratingsare treated:oneisformedbyalternatelystackingtwokindsofMIMwaveguides,anotherbyperiodicchangesinthedielectricinsulator materialsofanMIMwaveguide,andtheotherbyaperiodicvariationoftheaircorewidthinanMIMwaveguide.Thedispersion propertyofeachMIMwaveguideofwhichthegratingconsistsisanalyzedusingtheimplicitYee-mesh-basedbeam-propagation method.Itisshownthatthethirdonehasarelativelylargee?ectiveindexmodulationoftheguidedmodewithasimplegrating structure,whilemaintainingalowpropagationloss.Furtherexaminationisgiventomodi?cationsofthisgratingstructure.The transmissioncharacteristicsareexaminedusingthefrequency-dependentimplicitlocallyone-dimensionalFDTDmethod.We discusshowthemodi?edgratingstructurea?ectsthebandgapofthetransmissioncharacteristics. 1.Introduction Thee?ectiveindexversuscorewidthofeachMIMwaveguide is calculated using the imaginary-distance Yee-mesh-based beam-propagation method (YM-BPM) [8].
