Wahba * Department of Analytical Chemistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, Mansoura University, Mansoura, Egypt Email: manal_eid@ * Received August 11, 2011; revised September 28, 2011; accepted October 8, 2011 ABSTRACT Two simple and sensitive spectrofluorimetric (method Ι) and spectrophotometric (method ΙΙ) methods have been devel- oped for the determination of some chloride containing toothpastes and panthenol-containing cosmetic preparations respectively. Method Ι is based on quantitative fluorescence quenching of (terbium-salicylate-hexamine ternary com- plex) by fluoride which could be measured at λem/λex of 547 nm/322 nm. The ΔF-concentration plot was rectilinear over the concentration range of 0.5 - 20 μg/ml. Method ΙΙ depends reaction of panthenol with nitrobenzoxadiazole chloride (NBD-Cl) and measuring the absorbance of the resultant product at 480 nm. The absorbance-concentration plot was rectilinear over the concentration range of 2 - 20 μg/ml. Keywords: Panthenol; Spectrophotometry; Spectrofluorimetry; Stability Studies 1. Introduction depends on the fact that NBD-Cl is a fluorigenic agent specific for primary amino group, which is a result of the alkaline hydrolysis of panthenol to ? alanol. Since pan- thenol by itself, does not contain a primary amino group, it is supposed that it will not react with NBD-Cl without hydrolysis, which was used in this work as a basic con- cept to estimate the stability of panthenol in its local cosmetic preparations.
