AUTOPARAMETRICVIBRATIONSOFANONLINEARSYSTEM WITHPENDULUM J.WARMINSKIANDK.KECIK Received31December2004;Revised18May2005;Accepted11July2005 Vibrationsofanonlinearoscillatorwithanattachedpendulum,excitedbymovementof itspointofsuspension, havebeenanalysed inthepaper.Thederiveddi?erentialequa- tionsofmotionshowthatthesystemisstronglynonlinearandthemotionsofbothsub- systems,thependulumandtheoscillator,arestronglycoupledbyinertialterms,leading totheso-calledautoparametric vibrations. Ithasbeenfoundthatthemotionoftheos- cillator,forced byanexternal harmonic force,has been dynamically eliminated bythe pendulumoscillations.In?uenceofanonlinearspringonthevibrationabsorptionnear themainparametricresonanceregionhasbeencarriedoutanalytically,whereasthetran- sitionfromregulartochaoticvibrationshasbeenpresentedbyusingnumericalmethods. This is an open access article distributed undertheCreativeCommons Attribution License,whichpermits unrestricted use,dis- tribution,andreproductioninanymedium,providedtheoriginalworkisproperlycited. 1.Introduction Vibrationsofapendulumexcitedbydi?erentreasonshavebeenanalysedinmanypapers indi?erentaspects [1,8].Published results showthat eventhesimplest single pendu- lum structure, forcedbyanexternal forceorbyamoving point ofitssuspension, can leadtoveryinterestingandunexpected results[4,9].Amongthenonlinearsystems,we can mention aspecial class ofmodels which consists ofatleast twosubsystems. Ifthe subsystems arecoupledbyinertialterms[2],thenperiodic vibrations generated byone subsystembecomeanexcitationsourcefortheother.Thisphenomenonperformstheso- called autoparametric vibrations [8].Thisspeci?c coupling canleadtoenergy transfer betweendi?erentvibrationmodes[6],aswellas,toresonancespossibleonlyinthisspe- ci?cproblem[4].Moreover,additionaltypesofresonance,internalorcombination, are possible[3]and,forsomecond
