Objective.Recentresearchevidencesuggeststhattheconsumptionofdi?erenttypesofalcoholicbeveragemayhaveadi?erential e?ectoncardiovasculardiseases(CVD)mortalityrates.Theaimofthisstudywastoexaminetherelationbetweentheconsumption of di?erent beverage types and CVD mortality rates in Russia across the later-Soviet and post-Soviet periods. Method . Age- standardizedmaleandfemaleCVDmortalitydatafortheperiod1970–2005anddataonbeverage-speci?calcoholsaleswere obtainedRussianStateStatisticalCommittee(Rosstat).Time-seriesanalyticalmodelingtechniques(ARIMA)wereusedtoexamine therelationbetweenthesalesofdi?erentalcoholicbeveragesandCVDmortalityrates.Results.Vodkaconsumptionasmeasured bysaleswassigni?cantlyassociatedwithbothmaleandfemaleCVDmortalityrates:a1literincreaseinvodkasaleswouldresultin a5.3%increaseinthemaleCVDmortalityrateanda3.7%increaseinthefemalerate.Theconsumptionofbeerandwinewerenot associatedwithCVDmortalityrates.Conclusions.The?ndingsfromthisstudysuggestthatpublichealthe?ortsshouldfocuson bothreducingoverallconsumptionandchangingbeveragepreferenceawayfromdistilledspiritsinordertoreducecardiovascular mortalityratesinRussia. 1.Introduction alcoholconsumptionandCVDmortalityinRussiabetween 1965 and 1997 [10].
