Thispaperaimstounderstandhowcertaindi?erentbutinterrelatedvariablessuchasbackground,motivation,andsocialsupport couldleadtoanexplanationofstudentattitudestowardsmathandtoanunderstandingofthede?ningcharacteristicsofthese attitudesintheschoolenvironment.Participantsconsistedof1719Portuguesestudents,from?fth-to-twelfthgrade.Thestudy utilizesanadaptationofthe“IntrinsicMotivationInventory”assessingmaindeterminantsofintrinsicmotivation.Onesectionof thequestionnaire—“InmyMathClass”—alsoassessesstudentperceptionsofteacherandpeersupportaswellasstudentattitudes. Theresultsrevealedthat,ingeneral,studentsheldpositiveattitudestowardsmathematicsandalsohighlightedthemaine?ectsof gradeandmathachievementontheseattitudes.Nogendere?ectwasidenti?edalthoughthegirlsshowedacontinuousdeclinein attitudesthefurthertheyprogressedinschool.Ahierarchicalanalysisusingstructuralequationmodelingshowedthatmotivation- relatedvariablesarethemainpredictorsofattitudestowardsmathematicsandthatteachersandthesocialsupportofpeersare alsohighlysigni?cantinunderstandingtheseattitudes. 1.Introduction schools,families,andcommunities,inordertobringabout animprovementinthefailurerateinmath.
