Background.Toassessstructuralandfunctionalstatusofthearteriesinyoungandmiddle-agedmenwithrecentlydevelopedCAD. MethodsandResults.Atotalof78menaged28to50yearsunderwentcarotidultrasound,endothelialfunction,andarterialsti?ness measurements.AngiographicallyprovenCADwaspresentin49patients.Carotidplaqueswerepresentin45(91.8%)patientswith CADandin8(27.6%)menwithoutCAD(P0.001).PatientswithCADmoreoftenhadmultipleplaques(86.7%versus13.8%, P 0.001).Theprevalenceofcarotidintima-mediathickness(IMT)≥0.9mmandofabnormalbrachialartery?ow-mediated dilatation(FMD)wasnotdi?eringinbothgroups.Themeanaorticpulsewavevelocity(PWV)was6.8±1.3m/sforpatientswith CADand5.8±0.9m/sforsubjectswithoutCAD(P0.001).AorticPWVabovethe75thpercentileofthe“normal”sampleswas foundin26(53.1%)patientswithCADandin7(24.1%)subjectswithoutCAD(P=0.02).AorticPWVwasrelatedtotheseverity ofCAD.Conclusions.CarotidplaquesandincreasedaorticPWVmaybemorepowerfulpredictorsoftheoccurrenceofCADin youngandmiddle-agedmen,thanthepresenceofincreasedcarotidIMTandabnormalbrachialarteryFMD. 1.Introduction indexpressure(AAI),anddeterminationofaorticpulsewave velocity (PWV) [3].
