Carthamustinctorius(CT),alsonamedsa?ower,isatraditionalChinesemedicinewidelyusedtoimprovebloodcirculation.CT alsohasbeenstudiedforitsantitumoractivityincertaincancers.Toinvestigatethee?ectsofCTonthedendriticcell(DC)-based vaccineincancertreatment,cytokinesecretionofmousesplenicTlymphocytesandthematurationofDCsinresponsetoCT wereanalyzed.ToassesstheantitumoractivityofCTextractonmouseCD117 (c-kit)-derivedDCspulsedwithJCmammal + tumorantigens,theJCtumorwaschallengedbytheCT-treatedDCvaccineinvivo.CTstimulatedIFN-γandIL-10secretionof splenicTlymphocytesandenhancedthematurationofDCsbyenhancingimmunologicalmoleculeexpression.WhenDCvaccine waspulsedwithtumorantigensalongwithCTextract,thelevelsofTNF-αandIL-1βweredramaticallyincreasedwithadose- dependentresponseandmoreimmunologicandco-stimulatorymoleculeswereexpressedontheDCsurface.Inaddition,CT- treatedtumorlysate-pulsedDCvaccinereducedthetumorweightintumor-bearingmiceby15.3%morethantumorlysate-pulsed DCvaccinewithoutCTtreatment.CTpolarizedcytokinesecretiontowardtheTh1pathwayandalsoincreasedthepopulationof cytotoxicTlymphocytesexvivo.Inconclusion,CTactivatesDCsmightpromotetherecognitionofantigensandfacilitateantigen present
