Linear andnonlinear static feedback controls areimplemented onanonlinear aeroelastic system that consists ofarigid airfoil supported by nonlinear springs inthe pitch and plunge directions and subjected tononlinear aerodynamic loads. The normal form isused toinvestigate the Hopf bifurcation that occurs as the freestream velocity is increased and to analytically predict the amplitude and frequency of the ensuing limit cycle oscillations LCO. It is shown that linear controlcanbeusedtodelaythe?utteronsetandreducetheLCOamplitude.Yet,itsrequiredgains remainafunctionofthespeed.Ontheotherhand,nonlinearcontrolcanbee?cientlyimplemented toconvert anysubcritical Hopfbifurcation intoasupercritical oneandtosigni?cantly reducethe LCOamplitude. 1.Introduction Theresponseofanaeroelasticsystemisgovernedbyacombinationoflinearandnonlinear dynamics.Whencombined,thenonlinearitiesgeometric,inertia,free-play,damping,and/or aerodynamicsleadtodi?erentbehavior1–3,includingmultipleequilibria,bifurcations, limitcycles,chaos,andvarioustypesofresonancesinternalandsuper/subharmonic4 .A genericnonlinearsystemthathasbeenusedtocharacterizeaeroelasticbehavioranddynamic instabilitiesisatwo-dimensionalrigidairfoilundergoingpitchandplungemotions5,6 .As the parameters of this system
