This paper studies controller design forfeedback systems inthepresence ofasymmet-
rically bounded signals, usingacasestudy.Anasymmetric objective functional isused
toconsidertheasymmetrically boundedsignals,whichmakespossibletoderivealinear
programming problem. Solving thisLPmakespossible todesign controllers thatmini-
mizecertainoutputs,ful?llingatthesametimehardconstraintsoncertainsignals.The
method ispresented byapplication toahydrogenreformer,asystem inpetrochemical
plantsthatproduceshydrogenfromhydrocarbons:amixedsensitivityproblemisstated
and solved, with an additional constraint given by the asymmetric limitations on the
magnitudeandrateofthecontrolsignal,andtheasymmetricity inthedisturbances.

1.Introduction
Inmany control engineering problems, there areconstrained variables (in magnitude,
rate,acceleration,etc.),whoselimitsarenotsymmetricwithrespecttothenominalwork-
ingpoint.Thispaperstudiesanovelextensionofthe1controltheory,todirectlyhandle
theasymmetrical aspectofboundedsignals.
Thetopicofdesigning controlsystems thatmaintain stability (andperformance) in
thepresenceoftheseconstraintsisatopicofcontinuinginterest(see,e.g.,Eunetal.[7],
Mesquineetal.[9],andreferencestherein),becauserealplantsalwayspresentconstraints
onsignals(e.g.,thereisalwayssaturationofthecontrolsignalduetothelimitedrangeof
theactuators).Mostoftheapproachesproposedintheliteraturearebasedonconstraint
avoidance: preventing thesaturation, theclosed-loop system staysinaregion oflinear
behavior.
