Solving thisLPmakespossible todesign controllers thatmini- mizecertainoutputs,ful?llingatthesametimehardconstraintsoncertainsignals.The method ispresented byapplication toahydrogenreformer,asystem inpetrochemical plantsthatproduceshydrogenfromhydrocarbons:amixedsensitivityproblemisstated and solved, with an additional constraint given by the asymmetric limitations on the magnitudeandrateofthecontrolsignal,andtheasymmetricity inthedisturbances. Thetopicofdesigning controlsystems thatmaintain stability (andperformance) in thepresenceoftheseconstraintsisatopicofcontinuinginterest(see,e.g.,Eunetal.[7], Mesquineetal.[9],andreferencestherein),becauserealplantsalwayspresentconstraints onsignals(e.g.,thereisalwayssaturationofthecontrolsignalduetothelimitedrangeof theactuators).Mostoftheapproachesproposedintheliteraturearebasedonconstraint avoidance: preventing thesaturation, theclosed-loop system staysinaregion oflinear behavior.
