CORRECTSELFADJOINTANDPOSITIVEEXTENSIONSOF NONDENSELYDEFINEDMINIMALSYMMETRICOPERATORS I.PARASSIDISANDP.TSEKREKOS Received13May2004 LetA0beaclosed,minimalsymmetric operatorfromaHilbertspaceHintoHwithdo- mainnotdenseinH.LetAalsobeacorrectselfadjointextensionofAo.Thepurposeof thispaperis(1)tocharacterize, withthehelpofA,allthecorrectselfadjointextensions BofA withdomainequaltoD(A ),(2)togivethesolutionoftheircorrespondingprob- 0 lems,(3)to?ndsu?cientconditions forBtobepositive(de?nite) when Aispositive (de?nite). 1.Introduction Minimal symmetric operators arise naturally in boundary value problems where they representdi?erentialoperatorswithalltheirdefects,thatis,theirrangeisnotthewhole spaceandalsotheirdomain cannot bedenseinthewhole space.Forexample, theop- erator A0 de?ned by the problem A0y=iy , y(0)=y(1)=0 is a minimal symmetric nondenselyde?nedoperator.Theproblemof?ndingallcorrectselfadjointextensionsof aminimalsymmetric operatorisnoteithereasyoralwayspossible.Thewholeproblem isfacilitatedwhenthedomainofde?nitionoftheminimalsymmetric operatorisdense. Correct extensions ofdensely de?ned minimal not necessarily symmetric operators in HilbertandBanachspaceshavebeeninvestigatedbyVishik[17],Dezin[3],Otelbaevet al.[10],O??narovandParasidi[14],andmanyothers.Correctselfadjointextensionsofa denselyde?nedminimal symmetric operator A0havebeenstudiedbyanumberofau- thorsasJ.VonNeumann[13],Koˇcube??[7],Mikha??lets[12],andV.I.GorbachukandM. L.Gorbachuk[5].Theydescribedtheextensionsasrestrictionsofsomeoperators,usually oftheadjointoperatorA0 ofA0.Inthispaper,weattacktheaboveproblem,developing ? amethod which does not depend on maximal operators, but only on the existence of somecorrectselfadjointextensionofA0.Theessentialingredientinourapproachisthe extensionofthemainideain[14].Moreprecisely,weshow(Theorem3.2)thateverycor- rectselfadjointextensionofaminimaloperatorisuniquelydeterminedbyavectoranda Hermitianmatrix(seethecommentsprecedingTheorem3.2). I
