MaterialsandMethods:SurgeonsparticipatingintheUKUFFtrialweresentapostalquestionnairerequestingdetailson currentpractice,priorexperienceandtheirbeliefregardingacquiringproficiencyandthelearningcurveofoperationtime fortwosurgicalprocedures(openandarthroscopicrotatorcuffrepair). Results: In total 52 (58%) participating surgeons returned a completed questionnaire. The median (IQR) number of proceduresrequiredtoacquireproficiencywere17(10,23)and35(23,50)fortheopenandarthroscopicrepairsrespectively. Thedistributionofsurgeons’beliefregardingtheinitialpointhadmedian(IQR)of109(69,128)and145(97,171)minutesfor openandarthroscopicrepairrespectively.Correspondingvaluesfortheplateaupointwere60(46,82)and79(58,110). Conclusions:Wehaveshownthatinformationonthecurrentpractice,priorexperienceandbeliefsonthelearningprocess ofasurgicalprocedurecanbeelicitedusingashortquestionnaire.Theapproachcouldaidtheinterpretationoftrialresults intermsofgeneralisabilityandbeusedaprioriinthedesignofatrial.
