Abstract
Thisstudyinvestigatedwhether‘‘intentional’’instructionscouldimproveolderadults’objectmemoryandobject-location
memoryaboutascenebypromotingobject-orientedviewing.Eyemovementsofyoungerandolderadultswererecorded
whiletheyviewedaphotographdepicting12householdobjectsinacubiclewithorwithouttheknowledgethatmemory
about theseobjects andtheir locationswould betested(intentional vs.incidental encoding).Afterviewing, participants
completedrecognitionandrelocationtasks.Bothinstructionsandageaffectedviewingbehaviorsandmemory.Relativeto
incidentalinstructions,intentionalinstructionsresultedinmoreaccuratememoryaboutobjectidentityandobject-location
binding, but did not affect memory accuracy about overall positional configuration. More importantly, older adults
exhibitedmoreobject-orientedviewingintheintentionalthanincidentalcondition,supportingtheenvironmentalsupport
hypothesis.
