We find that the characteristic properties of alpha-helix based protein networksareduetotheparticularnanomechanicalpropertiesoftheirproteinconstituents,enablingtheformationoflarge dissipativeyieldregionsaroundstructuralflaws,effectivelyprotectingtheproteinnetworkagainstcatastrophicfailure.We showthatthekeyfortheseselfprotectingpropertiesisageometrictransformationofthecrackshapethatsignificantly reduces the stress concentration at corners. Specifically, our analysis demonstrates that the failure strain of alpha-helix basedproteinnetworksisinsensitivetothepresenceofstructuralflawsintheproteinnetwork,onlymarginallyaffecting their overall strength. Our findings may help to explain the ability of cells to undergo large deformation without catastrophicfailurewhileprovidingsignificantmechanicalresistance. Citation: Ackbarow T, S
