However,theexistenceofa‘‘Hoxcode’’predatingthecnidarian-bilaterianancestorandsupportingthedeephomologyof axesismorecontroversial.ThisassumptionwasmainlybasedontheinterpretationofHoxexpressiondatafromthesea anemone,butgrowingevidencefromothercnidariantaxaputsintoquestionthishypothesis. Methodology/Principal Findings: Hox, ParaHox and Hox-related genes have been investigated here by phylogenetic analysisandinsituhybridisationinClytiahemisphaerica,anhydrozoanspecieswithmedusaandpolypstagesalternatingin thelifecycle.OurphylogeneticanalysesdonotsupportanoriginofParaHoxandHoxgenesbyduplicationofanancestral ProtoHoxcluster,andrevealadiversificationofthecnidarianHOX9-14genesintothreegroupscalledA,B,C.Amongthe7 examinedgenes,onlythosebelongingtotheHOX9-14andtheCDXgroupsexhibitarestrictedexpressionalongtheoral- aboral axis during development andin the planula larva, while the othersare expressed in veryspecialised areas at the medusastage. Conclusions/Significance: Cross speciescomparison revealsastrong variabilityofgeneexpressionalongtheoral-aboral axis and during the life cycle among cnidarian lineages.
