Objective:Toevaluatetherelationshipofgaitparameters,anddemographicandphysicalcharacteristicsinhealthymen andwomen. Design,Setting,andParticipants:Recruitmentofasubsample(n=358)ofmaleandfemaleblooddonorstakingpartinthe CambridgeCardioResourcestudy.Collectionofdemographicdata,measurementofphysicalcharacteristics(height,weight andbloodpressure)andassessmentof7-day,free-livingactivityparametersusingaccelerometryandanovelalgorithmto measurewalkingspeed.Participantswereamedian(interquartilerange[IQR])ageof49(16)years;45%women;andhada median(IQR)BMIof26(5.4). MainOutcomeMeasure:Walkingspeed. Results:Inthisstudy,thehypothesisthatwalkingspeeddeclineswithagewasgeneratedusinganinitial‘open’dataset. Thiswassubsequentlyvalidatedinaseparate‘closed’datasetthatshowedadecreaseofwalkingspeedof20.0037m/sper year. This is equivalent toadifference of 1.2 minutes, when walking adistance of 1 kmaged 20 comparedto 60years. Associationsbetweenwalkingspeedandotherparticipantcharacteristics(i.e.gender,BMIandbloodpressure)werenon- significant.BMIwasnegativelycorrelatedwiththenumberofwalkingandrunningstepsandlongestnon-stopdistance. Conclusion:Thisisthefirststudyusingaccelerometrywhichshowsanassociationbetweenwalkingspeedandageinfree- living,healthyindividuals.Absolut
