We studied further the organization and development of colony after additional generations. By confocal laser scanning microscopyandreal-timeimaging,weobservedthatbacterialcellswereabletoself-organizeandresultedinanearcircular micro-colonyconsistingofmonolayercells.Aftercontinuousdividing,bacteriatransitedfromtwo-dimensionalexpansion intothree-dimensionalgrowthandformedtwotomulti-layersinthecenterbutretainedamonolayerintheouterringof thecircularcolony.Thetransversewidthofthisouterringappearedtobeapproximatelyconstantoncethemicro-colony reachedacertainage.Thisobservationsupportsthenotionthatbalancedinterplaysoftheforcesinvolvedleadtoagross morphologyasthebacteriadivideintooffspringonagarsurface.Inthiscase,theresultisduetoabalancebetweenthe expansionforceofthedividingbacteria,thenon-covalentforceamongbacterialoffspringandthatbetweenbacteriaand substratum.
