MethodsandFindings: Comprehensivesearcheswereconductedin22electronicdatabasesthroughMay2007.Further informationwasobtainedthroughhandsearchingjournals,searchingreferencelists,databasesofthesesanddissertations, andcontactingexpertsinthefield.Experimentalandobservationalanalyticstudieswereincludediftheywerewrittenin English and reported the efficacy of any behavioural or developmental intervention for individuals with ASD. Two independentreviewersmadethefinalstudyselection,extracteddata,andreachedconsensusonstudyquality.Resultswere summarizeddescriptivelyand,wherepossible,meta-analysesofthestudyresultswereconducted.One-hundred-and-one studiesatpredominantlyhighriskofbiasthatreportedinconsistentresultsacrossvariousinterventionswereincludedin thereview.Meta-analysesofthreecontrolledclinicaltrialsshowedthatLovaastreatmentwassuperiortospecialeducation onmeasuresofadaptivebehaviour,communicationandinteraction,comprehensivelanguage,dailylivingskills,expressive language,overallintellectualfunctioningandsocialization.High-intensityLovaaswassuperiortolow-intensityLovaason measuresofintellectualfunctioningintworetrospectivecohortstudies.Poolingtheresultsoftworandomizedcontrolled trials
