BrownLemurs(Eulemurfulvus)CanMasterthe QualitativeVersionoftheReverse-RewardContingency YannickGlady1,Emilie′ Genty2,Jean-JacquesRoeder1* 1IPHCDEPE,UMR7178,CNRS,Strasbourg,France,2UDS,CentredePrimatologie,Strasbourg,France Abstract Behavioralflexibilitythatrequiresbehavioralinhibitionhasimportantfitnessconsequences.Onetaskcommonlyusedto assessbehavioralinhibitionisthereverse-rewardtaskinwhichthesubjectisrewardedbythenonselecteditems.Lemurs weretestedfortheirabilitytosolvethequalitativeversionofthereverse-rewardtaskwiththechoicebetweenidentical quantitiesofdifferentfooditemsinsteadofdifferentquantitiesofthesamefood.Twooffoursubjectsmasteredthetask withoutacorrectionprocedureandwereabletogeneralizetheacquiredruletonovelcombinationsoffood.Oneofthe twosubjectscompetentonthequalityversionofthetaskcouldtransferthisabilitytodifferentquantitiesofthesamefood. Ourresultsarecomparedtolemurs’performanceswhentestedunderthequantitativeversioninapreviousstudyandthose ofcapuchinmonkeystestedunderasimilarparadigm.Thewholeresultssuggestthatthequalitativeversionofthereverse- reward task may be easier to master than its quantitative counterpart and that lemurs perform better than capuchin monkeysastheywereabletolatertransferthelearningruletothequantitativeversionofthetask.
