Methodology/PrincipalFindings:187remittedrecurrentlydepressedout-patientswereinterviewedusingtheStructured ClinicalInterviewforDSM-IVAxisIDisorders(SCID-I)andthe17-itemHamiltonDepressionratingscale(HAM-D)toverify remissionstatus(HAM-D,10).AllpatientsratedtheircurrentmoodwiththehelpofaVisualAnalogueMoodScale(VAMS) at baseline and at a follow-up assessment three months later. Relapse over 5.5-years was assessed by the SCID-I. Cox regressionrevealedthatboththeVAMSatbaselineandthreemonthslatersignificantlypredictedtimetorelapseover5.5- years.BaselineVAMSevenpredictedtimetorelapsewhenthenumberofpreviousdepressiveepisodesandHAM-Dscores werecontrolledfor.ThebaselineVAMSexplained6.3%ofvarianceintimetorelapse,comparabletotheHAM-Dinterview. Conclusions/Significance: Sad mood after remission appears to play a pivotal role in the course of depression. Since a simpleVAMSpredictedtimetorelapse,theVAMSmightbeaneasyandtime-effectivewaytomonitormoodandriskof earlyrelapse,andofferspossibilitiesfordailymonitoringusinge-mailandSMS.
