Methodology/PrincipalFindings:934patientswithtype2diabetesand918healthyvolunteersfromPudongNewArea, Shanghai, China, were interviewed during the period of Oct-Dec, 2006 to elicit demographic characteristics and lifestyle factors.Dietaryhabitswereassessedusingavalidatedfoodfrequencyquestionnaire.Anthropometricmeasurements,bio- specimen collection and biochemical assays were conducted at the interview according to a standard protocol. In this population,diabeticpatientsconsumedlowerlevelsofenergyandmacronutrientsbuthadhigherlevelsoffastingplasma glucose(FPG),glycolatedhemoglobinA1c(HbA1c),triglycerideandbodymassindexthanhealthyadults.Whiletheaverage consumptionlevelsofthenutrientsamongdiabeticpatientsdidnotvaryalongdurationofthedisease,theaveragelevels ofFPGandHbA1cincreasedwithincreasingduration.Regardlessofdiabetesduration,HbA1clevelwasobservedlowerin patientshavingahigherfiberorlowerGIintake.Comparedwiththosewiththelowesttertileintakeoffiber,theadjusted oddsratios(ORs)forpoorglycemiccontrolreducedfrom0.75(95%CI:0.54–1.06)to0.51(95%CI:0.34–0.75)withincreasing tertileintake(Pfortrend,0.001). Conclusions:DietaryfibermayplayanimportantroleinreducingHbA1clevel.Increasingfiberintakemaybeaneffective approachtoimproveglycemiccontrolamongChinesediabeticpatients. Ci
