Abstract
Background: Elevated blood pressure (BP), which is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, is highly prevalent
worldwide.Recently,interesthasgrownintheroleofdietaryproteininhumanBP.Weperformedasystematicreviewofall
publishedscientificliteratureondietaryprotein,includingproteinfromvarioussources,inrelationtohumanBP.
Methodology/Principal Findings: We performed a MEDLINE search and a manual search to identify English language
studiesontheassociationbetweenproteinandbloodpressure,publishedbeforeJune2010.Atotalof46papersmetthe
inclusioncriteria.Mostobservationalstudiesshowednoassociationoraninverseassociationbetweentotaldietaryprotein
andBPorincidenthypertension.Resultsofbiomarkerstudiesandrandomizedcontrolledtrialsindicatedabeneficialeffect
ofproteinonBP.Thisbeneficialeffectmaybemainlydrivenbyplantprotein,accordingtoresultsinobservationalstudies.
Dataonproteinfromspecificsources(e.g.fromfish,dairy,grain,soy,andnut)werescarce.Therewassomeevidencethat
BPinpeoplewithelevatedBPand/orolderagecouldbemoresensitivetodietaryprotein.
Conclusions/Significance:Inconclusion,evidencesuggestsasmallbeneficialeffectofproteinonBP,especiallyforplant
protein.Abloodpressureloweringeffectofproteinmayhaveimportantpublichealthimplications.However,thiswarrants
