Behavioral sAM detection thresholds for slow (5Hz) modulations were significantly worse for animalsrearedwithbilateralconductivehearingloss(CHL),ascomparedtocontrols.Thisdifferencecouldnotbeattributed tohearingthresholds,proficiencyatthetask,orproxiesforattention.Detectionthresholdsacrossthegroupsdidnotdiffer forfast(100Hz)modulations,aresultparallelingthatseeninhumans.NeuralresponsestosAMstimuliwererecordedin single auditory cortex neurons from separate groups of awake animals. Neurometric analyses indicated equivalent thresholdsforthemostsensitiveneurons,butasignificantlypoorerdetectionthresholdforslowmodulationsacrossthe populationofCHLneuronsascomparedtocontrols.Themagnitudeoftheneuraldeficitmatchedthatofthebehavioral differences,suggestingthatareductionofsensoryinformationcanaccountforlimitationstoperceptualskills.
