Using chromatin immunoprecipitation andgenome-wide analyses, we here demonstrate that the subtelomeric X and Y’ elements have distinct structural and functional properties. Y’ elements are transcriptionallyactiveandhighlyenrichedinnucleosomes,whereasXelementsarerepressedanddevoidofnucleosomes. IncontrasttoXelements,theY’elementsalsolacktheclassicalhallmarksofheterochromatin,suchashighSir3andRap1 occupancy as well as low levelsof histone H4 lysine 16 acetylation. Our analyses suggestthat the presence of X andY’ elementsgovernchromatinstructureandtranscriptionactivityatindividualchromosomeends.
