A Study on the English Translation of Public Signs in Xi’an Abstract：’s important to pay attention to C-E translation of public signs. Xi’an, has a long history and traditional inheritage, is one of the world’s four famous ancient capitals of civilization. It plays an important role in the development of China. Public signs in English are necessary for the foreigners to have a convenient environment to know about Xi’an deeply. But, in fact, we can find some mistakes appearing in public signs, which come from periodicals, books and translation websites. By comparison and analysis of public signs, the author tries to find out the errors in C-E translation public signs and put forward some useful strategies for reference. Key Words: public signs; C-E translation; Xi’an 西安城市公示语英语翻译 摘要：公示语是告示、限制、警示、标示等，与其生活、生产、生命、生态、生业休戚相关的文字及图形信息，在规范人的行为，协调人们的关系，提高效率方面起着重要作用。近些年来，随着经济的发展和市场的开放，中国与其他国家有了更深更广的交流。公示语作为一种工具，不仅显示我国公共场合的人性化服务，而且还消除了与其他国家的隔阂，增进与其他国家之间的友谊。因此，公示语的英译应该受到关注。西安作为世界闻名的四大古都之一，历史悠久，文化沉积非常厚重，在中国的发展中扮演着重要的角色。为了让外国友人更好的了解西安，公示语的英译是非常重要的。但事实上，我们在期刊，书本，翻译网站中发现公示语中存在很多问题。本文通过大量例证对西安公示语进行对比和分析，分析其中出现的问题，并针对这些问题找出了一些翻译方法作为参考。 关键词：公示语；英汉翻译；西安 Introduction Public sign is the general term for signs of indication, reminder, instructions and warning in public.
