Indeed, only a minority (,5%) of d-retrovirus infected hosts will develop either lymphoproliferative or neurodegenerativediseasesafterlonglatencyperiods.Infact,thehostimmuneresponseisbelievedtotightlycontrolviral replication but this assumption has not been definitely proven in vivo. Here, we provide direct experimental evidence demonstratingthatintegrityofthespleenisrequiredtocontrolpathogenesis.IntheBLVmodel,weshowthatasplenia decreasesefficiencyoftheimmuneresponseandinducesanimbalanceincelldynamicsresultinginacceleratedonsetof leukemia.TheseobservationsenlightenapotentialthreatinsplenectomizedHTLV-1carriersandjustifyaregularpreventive evaluation.
