EffectsofChemosignalsfromSadTearsandPostprandial PlasmaonAppetiteandFoodIntakeinHumans TaeJungOh,MinYoungKim,KyongSooPark,YoungMinCho* DepartmentofInternalMedicine,SeoulNationalUniversityCollegeofMedicine,Seoul,RepublicofKorea Abstract Chemosignalsfromhumanbodyfluidsmaymodulatebiologicalfunctionsinhumans.Theobjectiveofthisstudywasto examinewhetherchemosignals fromhumansadtearsandpostprandial plasmamodulateappetite.Weobtainedfasting andpostprandialplasmafrommaleparticipantsandsadtearsandsaline,whichwastrickledbelowtheeyelids,fromfemale volunteers.Thesesampleswerethenrandomlydistributedtomaleparticipantstosniffwithaband-aidcontaining100 m lof eachfluidonfourconsecutivedaysinadouble-blindfashion.Wecheckedappetitebyavisualanaloguescale(VAS)and foodintakebymeasuringtheconsumptionofatestmeal.Inaddition,theserumlevelsoftotaltestosteroneandLHwere measured.Twentymen(meanage26.364.6years)wereenrolledinthisstudy.Theycouldnotdiscriminatebetweenthe smelloffastingandpostprandialplasmaandthesmellofsadtearsandtrickledsaline.Appetiteandtheamountoffood intakewerenotdifferentbetweenthegroups.AlthoughtheVASratingsofappetitecorrelatedwiththefoodintakeupon sniffingfastingplasma,postprandialplasma,andtrickledsaline,therewasnosuchcorrelationuponsniffingsadtears.In addition,thedecreaseinserumtestosteronelevelsfromthebaselinewasgreaterwithsadtearsthanwiththetrickledsaline (228.663.3%vs.214.065.2%;P=0.019).Thesedatasuggestthatchemosignalsfromhumansadtearsandpostprandial plasmadonotappeartoreduceappetiteandfoodintake.However,furtherstudiesarenecessarytoexaminewhethersad tearsmayaltertheappetite-eatingbehaviorrelation.
