ABSTRACT
Background
Effectivetreatmentsfordegenerativeandtraumaticdiseasesofthenervoussystemarenot
currentlyavailable.Thesupportorreplacementofinjuredneuronswithneuralgrafts,already
anestablishedapproachinexperimentaltherapeutics,hasbeenrecentlyinvigoratedwiththe
addition of neural and embryonic stem-derived precursors as inexhaustible, self-propagating
alternativestofetaltissues.Theadultspinalcord,i.e.,thesiteofcommondevastatinginjuries
andmotorneurondisease,hasbeenanespeciallychallengingtargetforstemcelltherapies.In
most cases, neural stem cell (NSC) transplants have shown either poor differentiation or a
preferentialchoiceofgliallineages.
