AlthoughwedonotknowallthecausesofLBW,maternalandenvironmentalfactorsappeartobesignificantriskfactorsin itsoccurrence. Objectives:ToknowthefactorsaffectingthebirthweightofanewbornandtoestimatetheprevalenceofLBW. Methods:Thepresentstudywascarriedoutamongst1138pregnantwomenandtheirnewbornsresidinginareacovered byKinayePrimaryHealthCentreinruralKarnataka,India.Thestudywasconductedfrom1stJune2008to31st 2009. December Results:Themeanbirthweightofnewbornswas2.6kgwitharangeof1.2to3.8kg.TheprevalenceofLBWwas22.9%. Amongthestudiedriskfactors,25ofthemweresignificantlyassociatedwiththebirthweightofanewbornonunivariate logistic regression analysis. Maternal education [Odds Ratio (OR) 3.2], exposure to passive smoking [OR 2.3], age at first pregnancy$25years[OR3.6],birthinterval,2years[OR2.4],previoushistoryofLBWbaby[OR3.3],weightgain# 4kg duringpregnancy[OR7.0],maternalweightatlastweekofgestation#45kg[OR2.3],pregnancyinducedhypertension[OR 3.3],highriskpregnancy[OR3.6]andlateantenatalregistration[OR3.6]emergedassignificantriskfactorsonmultivariate analysis. Conclusion:TheproblemofLBWismultidimensional,andhence,weneedanintegratedapproachincorporatingmedical, social,economicalandeducationalmeasurestoaddressthisissue.
