Most patients survivemorethan5yearsaftersurgeryandpostoperativeradiationtherapy.The10yearsurvivalrate,however,dropsto 40%, due to locoregional recurrences and distant metastases. Improving long-term survival in ACC requires the developmentofmoreeffectivesystemictherapiesbasedonabetterunderstandingofthebiologicbehaviorofACC.Much preclinicalresearchinthisfieldinvolvestheuseofculturedcellsand,todate,severalACCcelllineshavebeenestablished. Authenticationofthesecelllines,however,hasnotbeenreported.WeperformedDNAfingerprintanalysisonsixACCcell linesusingshorttandemrepeat(STR)examinationsandfoundthatallsixcelllineshadbeencontaminatedwithothercells. ACC2,ACC3,andACCMweredeterminedtobecervicalcancercells(HeLacells),whereastheACCScelllinewascomposed of T24 urinary bladder cancer cells. ACCNS and CAC2 cells were contaminated with cells derived from non-human mammalianspecies:thecellslabeledACCNSweremousecellsandtheCAC2cellswereratcells.Theseobservationssuggest thatfuturestudiesusingACCcelllinesshouldincludecelllineauthenticationtoavoidtheuseofcontaminatedornon- humancells.
