Occlusal microwear analysisrevealscomplexmicroweartexturesinC.atysunlikethoseobservedinA.africanus,butmorecloselyresembling textures observed in Paranthropus robustus. Since sooty mangabeys process hard objects in a manner similar to that proposedforA.africanus,yetdosowithoutthecraniofacialbuttressingcharacteristicofthishominin,itfollowsthatderived featuresoftheaustralopithskullaresufficientbutnotnecessaryfortheconsumptionoflarge,hardobjects.Theadaptive
