ModulationofMotorAreaActivitybytheOutcomefora PlayerduringObservationofaBaseballGame SotaroShimada* DepartmentofElectronicsandBioinformatics,SchoolofScienceandTechnology,MeijiUniversity,Kawasaki,Kanagawa,Japan Abstract Background:Observingcompetitivegamessuchassportsisapervasiveentertainmentamonghumans.Theinclinationto watch others play may be based on our social-cognitive ability to understand the internal states of others. The mirror neuronsystem,whichisactivatedwhenasubjectobservestheactionsofothers,aswellaswhentheyperformthesame actionthemselves,seemstoplayacrucialroleinthisprocess.Ourpreviousstudyshowedthatactivityofthemirrorneuron systemwasmodulatedbytheoutcomeofthesubject’sfavoredplayerduringobservationofasimplecompetitivegame (rock-paper-scissors). However, whether the mirror neuron system responds similarly in a more complex and naturalistic sportsgamehasnotyetbeenfullyinvestigated. Methodology/PrincipalFindings:Inthepresentstudy,wemeasuredtheactivityofmotorareaswhenthesubjects,who wereamateurbaseballfieldplayers(non-pitchers),watchedshortmovieclipsofscenesinprofessionalbaseballgames.The subjectswereinstructedtosupporteitherabatterorapitcherwhenobservingthemovieclip.Theresultsshowedthat activityinthemotorareaexhibitedastronginteractionbetweenthesubject’ssupportedside(batterorpitcher)andthe outcome(ahitoranout).Whenthesubjectsupportedthebatter,motorareaactivitywassignificantlyhigherwhenthe battermadeanoutthanwhenhemadeahit.However,suchmodulationwasnotapparentwhenthesubjectsupportedthe pitcher. Conclusions/Significance: This result indicates that mirror neuron system activity is modulated by the outcome for a particularplayerinacompetitivegameevenwhenobservingacomplexandnaturalisticsportsgame.Wesuggestthatour inclinationtowatchcompetitivegamesisfacilitatedbythischaracteristicofthemirrorneuronsystem.
